I got them
like squirrels
collect
nuts
for you
and
to sustain
me through
the waiting
until
you come out
that we
have great
things to look
forward to
beyond the
extraordinary
fact of
living
just the
living
geniuses
make the most
amazing fact of life
almost banal
but that way we
won’t applaud
too loudly
the miracle of
surviving
that far
into
the future
and I don’t want to bet against
either of us
that payphone
rings like an
almost-extinct
cuckoo
muffled by the play
of geniuses
whose nature
is far more
instinctive
than either
silk worms
or
squirrels
