A BIRD
THIS MORNING

A bird this morning
into the house flew
and landed on the table
next to my coffee
while I was stirring
A shaft of light
followed it like a razor
an aggregate of
all the birds of the Annunciation
This bird pierced
my solitude too
its spirit
through walls
and closed doors
On a winter morning
unspeakably
The strangest thing
occurred to me
what if I am the mother of Christ?
Me, a boy.
Was it for this that I was waiting?
At that moment,
the bird
scampered about the house
And I followed
I lost sight of it
but I could hear it.
In the future,
We would only be able to read it.
And the book said the most improbable things
but it must be true
These testaments
Like eternal truths
of an ancient people
But I was there
When the bird appeared
And I remember its song
All apocryphas, like deltas
Flow into the same ocean
How simple it seems now
And I laugh at how troubled and lost I was before
My morning coffee
